Do you like working on Hands-on Projects? Do you ever wonder how things work? Do you like designing and seeing your ideas come to life?
Then think about the Engineering Pathway!
In the Engineering Pathway, students will complete integrated projects, learn how to use new machines, and design their ideas in CAD.
RECENT ACTIVITiES
The PLTW classes offered at California High School give students exposure to the engineering design process, programming, and testing through hands-on labs. Experiences in the PLTW classes allow students to learn about the complexities found in the engineering field. Each student is provided with an engineering notebook where they can design machines or do calculations. In later courses, students build prototypes of machines they designed using VEX parts. Every PLTW course covers a wide range of information surrounding the engineering field, from electrical to mechanical, the possibilities are endless!
CLASSES AVAILABLE
Introduction to Engineering Design (IED)* IED gives students an opportunity to learn more about the engineering design process by having them design their own parts in SolidWorks, a 3D CAD design software. Later, students will utilize the 3D printers and CNC milling machine to make their designs come to life. This is a hands-on course, where students will develop their critical thinking skills by designing and manufacturing parts that stimulate real-world experiences.
Principles of Engineering (POE)* In this course, students will explore technology systems and engineering processes to learn how math, science, and technology help people. The topics introduced include design process, communication and documentation, engineering systems, statics, properties of materials, quality assurance, materials testing, and engineering for reliability. Through student activities, projects and problems students will explore the wide variety of careers in engineering and technology and examine various technology systems and manufacturing systems.
Engineering Research and Design (ERD) ERD allows students to use all their engineering knowledge they have collected from previous courses to design, manufacture, program, and test an innovation of their own. Students are given the entire school year to complete their project while having access to the entire machine shop. In this course, students will use their skills in time management, documentation, and effective communication while allowing their creativity to run wild. *no prerequisites required
