Project GIRLS (Girls in Robotics Love STEM) was created to involve more girls in STEM related activities taking place throughout California High School.

Who we Are
With the help of the Engineering Pathway and the Cal High Robotics Club, we were able to create this outreach program to get more girls involved in the various STEM activities taking place across campus. We hope to teach girls that there are many opportunities available to them now, that allow them to start branching out into fields involving math, science, technology, and engineering.
WHY?
A survey done in 2014 by Catalyst.org shows that, globally, women account for less than a third (28.8%) of those employed in scientific research and development. We want to change that. Often young girls believe there are not many opportunities involving STEM that are easily accessible for them. Our goal in creating Project GIRLS is to shed light on programs that are especially open to young women wanting to pursue a future in any STEM discipline.
Our Robot
Our robot was created from scratch. This allowed us to document the engineering design process, the building phase, and the initial testing and programming. We designed a ping pong ball shooter that uses a flywheel system, two extremely fast spinning wheels, to shoot the ball. Our ping pong ball shooting system rests on top of a mecanum wheel drive train. The mecanum wheels allow the robot to drive in diagonal lines without having to turn the entire robot. The drive train and the ping pong shooter come together to make a fascinating robot that we were able to bring to life thanks to the engineering design process.

OUR Team
Our project is run by a team of California High School students who are passionate about involving more young women in science, math, engineering, and technology. STEM related opportunities can be found throughout the Cal High curriculum and in after school activities.
